Our Proven Approach
Haley’s Hope provides answers and hope. One-on-one tutoring greatly improves the reading, spelling and writing skills of children and adults with dyslexia.
Our teaching approach was developed by internationally-renowned dyslexia and reading instruction expert, Susan Barton. She launched the Orton-Gillingham based Barton Reading and Spelling System™ in 1998.
An Orton-Gillingham approach is a direct, explicit, multi-sensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia. A fidelity based OG system, in the hands of a well-trained and certified coach, is an effective tool of remarkable scope, strength, and flexibility.
The Barton Reading and Spelling System has been proven effective over time, independently tested in public and private school studies. It is endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association. Plus, it has a thumbs up from kids and parents in North Dakota and Minnesota whose lives have been changed through Haley’s Hope teaching of this fidelity based Orton-Gillingham system.
Haley’s Hope literacy coaches are methodically trained in these instruction techniques. Its multi-sensory approach was developed by Susan Barton in her pursuit of a successful instruction for her own nephew. Extensive information is available on her website.
Coaches help students perceive speech sounds (phonemes) while learning how these sounds relate to letters or combinations of letters like sh and th. They learn how sounds and letters act in words, bringing to life a myriad of language “rules.” Hands, eyes, ears and voice all tune in to organize information and etch what’s learned into memory. New brain pathways are built to process sounds and printed words, to connect speech and reading.
Haley’s Hope has been teaching using this visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic sensory learning approach since 2011. It’s how we overcome reading challenges in ways that other reading instruction methods fall short.
Students enjoy their quickening pace, and feel fully engaged in the process of learning without fear, shame or judgement. Each lesson builds on the last, and empowerment grows through advancement in levels of the Barton Reading and Spelling System. Both how and what is taught is different, and while every lesson follows a framed methodology, the pace is attuned to one singularly important child: your own.
